What an expression book should hold

An English expression book should not be only a word list. Record short lines you can reuse, plus the scene and the tone, so spoken phrases are easier to use again.

Many learners have a word notebook, and few have an expression book that actually helps them speak. The reason is simple: knowing what a word means does not mean you can say it naturally in a conversation.

Avo encourages recording phrases you can reuse. That means sentences that are short, natural, and tied to a scene. They travel into real conversation more easily than isolated words.

Do not record only words

Words matter, but what speaking actually uses is usually a phrase or a sentence pattern.

For example, recording only sorry is weaker than remembering a few ways to answer:

  • Don't worry about it.
  • It happens.
  • No problem at all.

These phrases have a scene, and they have a tone. The next time someone apologizes, you are more likely to call one up directly.

Three kinds of content for an expression book

1. High-frequency short lines

A short line is best at 3 to 8 words. The easier it is to say, the better. A sentence that is too long is hard to recall quickly in a real conversation.

2. The scene where it is used

Next to each phrase, it is best to note a scene, such as "answering an apology," "making a suggestion," or "comforting a friend." The scene helps you know when to use it.

3. A note on tone

The same sentence can be polite, and it can be cold. Recording the tone is more useful than recording only the Chinese meaning.

How to review an expression book

When you review an expression book, do not only look at the English and the Chinese. A better method is to look at the scene first, then try to say a sentence yourself.

If you cannot say it, go back to the original clip and listen once. What you are reviewing is not the text. It is how to say something in a particular scene.

How Avo handles phrases

Avo pulls useful phrases out of short scenes and lets them enter later review. The learner does not need to copy a whole stretch of dialogue. They only need to keep the part they can actually use.

This is lighter, and it is closer to real speaking practice.

FAQ

How many sentences should an expression book hold?

Three to five a day is enough. The point is that you can review them and say them, not that the number looks good.

Do I still need to memorize words?

Yes, but do not memorize only isolated words. Put the word into a short sentence and a scene, and the memory is steadier.

Can I rewrite a phrase myself?

Yes. Being able to rewrite it means you are starting to understand the phrase, not only memorize the lines.

Next step

After you finish a clip today, do not save every line. Pick a few things you might actually say next week, and put them in the expression book.
